T.A.T.
The big boy. The pinnacle of overland trails throughout the 48 continental states. The Trans-America Trail is a 4500-5000 mile off-road route across the entire USA, originally developed by Sam Correro at transamtrail.com.
The original starting location is Tellico plains, Tennessee. It snakes through the backroads of Tennessee and Mississippi before crossing the River into Arkansas. After an essentially straight line of dirt and mud through Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, it enters the rocky mountain state of Colorado. Most everyone’s favorite part of the trip starts here as it meanders its way through Colorado and into the mountains and deserts of Utah and Nevada, finally ending in Oregon, on the west coast.
I’ve also seen versions of it that begin in Andrews and Asheville, North Carolina. Currently there is a route developed that begins in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, as well as a NY City to L.A. route to make it truly “trans-America”. Even though all of the additions and changes to the TAT are great and give us even more places on the map to explore, Sam’s page is the only one I feel comfortable providing a link for, considering he is the original concept builder.
Sections out west may require lift kits, large tires, and/or plenty of quality recovery gear.
